Mayor Woodfin appoints public information officer for second term
Birmingham, AL – Mayor Randall L. Woodfin has appointed seasoned communicator Marie Sutton as Public Information Officer for the City of Birmingham.
As the Public Information Officer, Sutton will serve as the Senior Communications Officer in the Office of Public Information, interacting with the public and the media.
“I am pleased to announce Marie Sutton as Public Information Officer,” said Mayor Woodfin. “The Bureau of Public Information plays an important role in telling the story of our city. I challenged our team to continue to create new and innovative ways to speak with our residents, employees and businesses. Ms. Sutton will play a key role in this conversation.
Sutton will take up her duties on Monday, November 22, 2021. She will replace current Public Information Officer Chanda Temple, who will take on a new position of Senior Project Manager in the Mayor’s Office.
“I consider it a great honor to be commissioned by Mayor Woodfin to serve the City of Birmingham in this role,” said Sutton. “As a proud native, Birmingham has offered me so many ways; I hope to reciprocate.
Sutton arrives in the city of Birmingham after a long career as a journalist, author and public relations professional. She has worked as a freelance writer, reported for the Birmingham News, represented several public relations organizations and worked at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for over 10 years. She most recently served as the Director of Marketing and Communications for Student Affairs at UAB. Sutton is the author of “The AG Gaston Motel: A Historic Landmark”, published in 2014. Sutton received his BA from Stillman College and an MA from UAB.
