Delhi Police contacts NIFT for new uniform, with focus on comfort
Delhi Police have asked the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to come up with fresh uniform designs, with an immediate focus on clothes that would be more comfortable for the force, The Indian Express has learned.
A presentation in this regard was shown to Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana. “The main objective of the project is to design and develop prototype uniforms for the Delhi Police to give a unique identity and a sense of pride to the uniform. The main emphasis, while designing, should be on the comfort level,” a senior police officer said.
Last week, a committee of eight officers led by JCP Meenu Choudhary was formed to go further. “The Competent Authority is pleased to form a committee of officers to liaise with NIFT officials to finalize the Delhi Police uniform design. Apart from Choudhary, there are three DCP rank officers, two additional DCPs, Delhi Police Spokesman Suman Nalwa and one DCP rank officer from the traffic unit,” the order issued on March 21 states. by CPA Dinesh Keshav.
“The uniform categories he plans to redesign include summer khaki uniform for men and women, white and blue summer uniform for traffic police, ceremonial uniform (summer and winter ), the summer and winter uniform for Delhi Police Security Unit personnel, uniform choice for women, which could include the fusion of traditional and western outfits,” said one senior police officer aware of developments.
Accessories to match the uniforms will also be designed for staff. “This will include caps for summer and winter uniforms for local police and traffic, equipment carriers in the form of belts or bomber jackets, shoes, raincoats, winter cardigans, jackets heavy-duty winter jackets, backpacks, sports bags, phosphorus jackets for use at night / in foggy weather, and accessories for motorcycle patrol personnel,” the officer said. “Some other uniforms in the ‘special requirement’ category will also be considered for a makeover. These include the uniform of the gang police, mounted police, canine squad and crime squad,” the officer said.
It is learned that about Rs 50 lakh has been approved by the Delhi Police HQ for the project. “NIFT officials also shared a cost breakdown with the police and informed them that the administration fee is around Rs 9.13 lakh, supply of fabrics and other materials is Rs 3 lakh, Rs 4 lakh is for material testing, Rs 10 lakh for prototyping of sets and accessories, Rs 2.6 lakh for research and design, Rs 8 lakh for branding and Rs 5.62 lakh for counseling fees,” the officer said.
Delhi Police spokesman Suman Nalwa did not respond to calls and messages from the Indian Express seeking comment.
