WASHINGTON, DC – Considering a career in law enforcement? Mississippi is not the place, according to a new study.

Offering the lowest median income among the 50 states and the District of Columbia and 50th in opportunity for law enforcement officers, a study published by WalletHub ranks Mississippi as the fifth worst place for law enforcement officers in the United States.

Looking at 30 relevant metrics broken down into three broad categories, the study shows that Mississippi ranks 41st or lower in five of the categories and in no category does the state rank in the top five.

Across the top three categories, Mississippi ranked 50th in Opportunity & Competition, which looked at factors such as salary, revenue growth, officers employed per capita, and expected jobs in law enforcement. law by 2028.

In “Job Hazards & Protections,” the state ranked 47th after looking at metrics such as police deaths per 1,000 officers, share of law enforcement officers assaulted and violent crime rate .

Mississippi scored highest in “law enforcement training,” earning a 37th ranking after reviewing data including required training hours, certifications and continuing professional education requirements.

Among the subcategories, Mississippi ranked:

  • 51st for median law enforcement income (adjusted for cost of living)
  • 46th for law enforcement median income growth
  • 41st in percentage of solved homicide cases
  • 45th for national and local police protection spending per capita
  • 45th for police deaths per 1,000 police officers

Mississippi’s median income for law enforcement of $52,600 is well below the national median income of $66,020 and even below the national median of $53,490 for all jobs.

Illinois offered the highest salary for law enforcement, while the other four states joining Mississippi at the bottom were from the south: North Carolina, Louisiana, South Carolina and Arkansas .

After two tumultuous years of COVID, social unrest and the abrupt departure of its last leader, the New Orleans Public Library has a new executive director.

The library board named interim director Emily Painton as the permanent head of the city’s library system at the end of April, five months after the former city librarian resigned as the it was questioned whether he met the city’s residency requirement.

Unlike his predecessor Gabriel Morley, Painton is an inside hire and a known-base quantity. And while she can count on stable finances thanks to voter approval of a new mileage in December, she still faces challenges.

The library has reduced the opening hours of its branches as it struggles to hire enough staff. And while some customers are switching from physical to digital books, others are struggling to navigate in the internet age. Acknowledging these issues in an interview, Painton still struck an optimistic note.

“This city deserves a fantastic library. I think we are doing a lot of great things. I think we can do even more,” she said.

Pandemic issues

It took 13 years for the system to fully reopen after Hurricane Katrina. Nineteen months after the last of six libraries destroyed by the storm returned to service, COVID shut down the system.

The system has adapted with curbside book drives and virtual book clubs. But many staff members complained that library leaders were too slow to close the library and too quick to reopen it.

In addition to fears about exposure to COVID, some staff felt like they were being targeted for possible budget cuts. Those fears came to a head with a 2020 mile vote in which Mayor LaToya Cantrell proposed to redirect library funds to early childhood education and other priorities.

The property tax proposal pitted library board members and employees against Morley, who supported Cantrell. Voters rejected the plan. Then came the revelation last November that Morley was claiming a homestead exemption in Mississippi despite the requirement that he live here. He quit within hours.

From Austin to Orleans

Painton, 50, said she lived in Hollygrove. Originally from Oklahoma, she grew up visiting New Orleans often and earned a library degree in Austin. She worked as an archivist and in the library management of the West Bank campus of Delgado University before Katrina.

In 2005, she evacuated to Austin and worked in that city’s library system until 2015. She returned to New Orleans to work as the library’s senior manager. As director of public services for the library since June 2020, Painton was responsible for implementing many of the library’s responses to COVID.

Twice a day we’ll send you the day’s headlines. Register today.

Painton’s elevation to chief librarian came a month before the December 2021 vote on a 20-year dedicated library mile, meaning Painton has quickly become a public face of the successful effort. Turning her attention to ordinary operations, Painton said she drew on her experience in Austin despite the differences between the two cities.

While the Texas capital has relatively high literacy and digital literacy rates, many adults in New Orleans struggle with both. The needs in New Orleans are so great that Painton plans to hire a social worker who can help guide clients through online job applications or government assistance.

“Everything is online. Even fast food job applications are online,” she said. “There is a much greater need for social services in this city than the library fills.”

Dealing with turnover

Although she plans to expand library services, one of her biggest immediate challenges is to boost morale and stop the turnover. The system is about 50 staff short of the number it had before COVID, Painton said.

She visits branches for coffee with staff members to try to improve communication. The book on Painton’s bedside table is a business management tome: “Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity.”

Last month, the city council approved pay increases for some staff members that Painton hopes will slow attrition. But she acknowledges that the salary has not been enough to prevent her from losing two promising candidates recently.

“We can’t do great things if we don’t have great people, so I really want to make sure we’re able to compensate people properly,” she said.

Staffing shortages mean many branches have shorter hours. Nix, Mid-City and Alvar branches are also closed to physical traffic thanks to a mix of water damage and termites, but Painton hopes everything will reopen soon, starting with the Mid-City branch on the 16th. may.

New ways to read

Painton is also trying to respond to consumer shifts that have been accelerated by the pandemic. More and more customers are reading books digitally or watching movies online.

Painton said the library is adapting by purchasing more digital books and expanding its digital literacy training. As a former archivist, she has an attachment to “old, beautiful and irreplaceable books”, but she generally reads recent works on her Kindle.

“For me, what’s exciting about this is that people who may not come to the library every day but who pay taxes and support us, have more access to us,” he said. she declared.

Amazon shut down Alexa.com. Although it may not be immediately obvious, the decision to remove the popular web traffic analysis and website ranking service has some impact on the cybersecurity industry.

When accessing alexa.com, users are now greeted with an end-of-service notice stating that the site was retired on May 1, 2022.

Alexa was founded in 1996 and was acquired by Amazon in 1999. Amazon announced its decision to retire the service in December 2021. The Alexa Top Sites and Web Information Service APIs will be retired on December 15, 2022. Amazon didn’t share any details about why it shut down Alexa, only saying it was a “tough decision.”

One of the most popular Alexa services was “Top Sites”, which provided free listings of websites ranked by Alexa traffic ranking.

The Alexa Top 1 Million list has been used by many in the cybersecurity industry, including to analyze the security practices and posture of the world’s most popular websites, and to create lists of trusted sites.

DomainTools, a company that provides insights based on domain and DNS data, provided a website’s Alexa rating to customers in an effort to help them determine whether a certain site should be blocked.

The logic is that if a domain ranks high on Alexa’s list, it’s probably popular, and blocking that domain for users within an organization could cause problems.

DomainTools said in late April that it would be generate your own listand the company concluded that the best approach would be to combine four types of data: domains requested by users in their browser, domains requested by a user’s system in DNS (this is tracked by Cisco Umbrella), requested domains across an organization’s DNS (this is tracked by Farsight Security, which DomainTools acquired), and tagged domains by their connections to each other.

This data will be collected from Cisco Umbrella, Farsight, Netcraft (top 100 data collected by its browser plugin), and majestic millionwhich provides a free list of the 1 million most popular websites based on the number of referring subnets.

The data will be combined into a single list using an average methodology named Trancothat a team of researchers from European universities KU Leuven, Delft University of Technology and Grenoble Alpes University described in 2019.

Victor Le Pochat of the imec-DistriNet research group at KU Leuven, one of the researchers involved in the Tranco project, said safety week that in the short term, security teams will need to identify all dependencies on the Alexa list. Some processes might crash due to their inability to retrieve the list.

“In the longer term,” Le Pochat explained, “these researchers should determine for what purposes they are using popularity rankings and whether they fully understand the implications. For example, we showed in our 2019 paper that such rankings contain known malicious domains. This is not surprising – if a malicious campaign is widespread, any domain name it misuses becomes technically “popular”.

“One way to cope is to demand popularity over a longer period of time and across views. We’ve incorporated this idea into our search-driven approach Tranco Rankingwhere we aggregate over 30 days and multiple source lists,” the researcher added.

Andrew Hay, COO at LARES Consulting and former director of research at OpenDNS, believes that the biggest impact of the Alexa shutdown will be “on the algorithms that security vendors leverage to provide analytics, blocklists, and basic heuristics to their respective clients”.

“Many vendors use Alexa rankings to benchmark traffic typical of certain types of websites (eg, online retailers, news sites, entertainment venues, etc.). This profiling data may then be associated with “similar” websites to determine its validity or effectiveness for the Providers’ customers. The loss of the Alexa repository will have security vendors scrambling to find a new external source of traffic data – a potential monetization opportunity for large ISPs,” Hay explained.

Examples of Alexa alternatives Hay mentioned include Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz and Serpstat, but he noted that the majority of them come with a monthly subscription.

John Bambenek, principal threat hunter at Netenrich, a California-based IT operations and digital security firm, described Alexa Top Million as an “imperfect whitelist for machine learning and other automated systems to prevent site blocking.” legitimate websites”.

“Cisco Umbrella, Majestic, and Tranco are alternatives, however, each of the above exposes one of the problems we have in cybersecurity machine learning in that we just don’t have good data The few sources we have, although imperfect approximations, are probably not long for this world,” Bambenek said. safety week.

The Competitive Research Suite highlights top search competitors and identifies strategic keyword and content opportunities to help outrank them.

SEATTLE, May 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Moza leader in search engine optimization technology, today announced the launch of its Competitive Research Suite with Keyword Gap, a new tool that highlights competitors’ top keywords and pieces of content. The tool works with the previously announced True Competitor tool and is no longer in beta.

Keyword Gap will allow users to improve their search engine results page (SERP) visibility by showcasing keywords that their domain ranks for but could improve on; the keywords their competitors are ranking for that they are not; and the best pieces of content and keywords contributing to good competitor rankings. A new metric called Traffic Lift will be displayed with the identified keywords, showing the traffic users could receive if they outperformed their competitors for a specific keyword.

“Marketers are often narrow-minded when it comes to competition, stuck in outdated offline battles for vanity. Even SEOswho monitor changing search results every day, can be overwhelmed with data dumps of every company, product and piece of content they compete with,” said dr. Pete Meyers, Marketing Scientist at Moz. “Our competitive research suite cuts through the noise, revealing your true online rivals, showing exactly where they compete with you, and arming you with the keywords and content you need to succeed.”

Competitive Research Suite’s other tool, True Competitor, can be used in conjunction with Keyword Gap. Once True Competitor has identified up to 25 of a website’s competitors, these results (up to three competing domains) can be imported into Keyword Gap, where keyword analysis will begin.

“Moz’s competitive research suite was instrumental in our client’s search strategy. We identified their competitors’ competing sites and benchmarked keywords to uncover opportunities for improvement,” said Kathy GrunditzManager, brand strategy at One North. “The ranking distribution chart in Keyword Gap is particularly useful. It’s a simple, visual way to highlight the need for more robust keyword strategies.”

In addition to the new suite of tools from MozProMoz Academy has launched a brand new Competitive Analysis Certificate. The six-part certification will train SEOs on how to build a comprehensive competitive strategy. After on-demand classes and assignments to check understanding, students will take a final exam and receive a LinkedIn certificate and badge.

The Competitive Research Suite is now available in MozPro for all customers, and certification is available for purchase through Moz Academy. To learn more about the Competitive Research Suite and Competitive Analysis Certification, please visit www.moz.com.

MANILA, Philippines – INQUIRER.net has maintained its lead in rankings and web traffic among news sites in the country, according to the latest data from web traffic analytics provider Similarweb.

Based on country rankings, data from Similarweb showed INQUIRER.net at 34th place, followed by ABS-CBN News websites at 46th, GMA at 52nd, Rappler at 58th. and The Manila Times at the 96th.

Meanwhile, INQUIRER.net ranked 3,137 globally, followed by ABS-CBN at 4,025, GMA at 4,922, Rappler at 5,992 and The Manila Times at 9,742.

The site’s ranking is from the last 28 days, as of April 8.

According to Similarweb, INQUIRER.net also topped monthly visits in March with 19.15 million, followed by ABS-CBN with 13.51 million, GMA with 10.32 million, Rappler with 11.51 million and The Manila Times with 6. .30 million.

In February, data from Similarweb also showed that INQUIRER.net topped other competing Filipino news sites in terms of traffic to its website in January.

Similarweb reported that INQUIRER.net was primarily in the lead in terms of daily traffic for desktop users, with an audience share of 27.99% from December 28, 2021 to January 23, 2022.

That’s more than ABS-CBN’s 21.07%, Rappler’s 19.29%, Philstar’s 15.85% and GMA’s 15.79%.

In terms of mobile phone user traffic over the same period, INQUIRER.net was only surpassed once by ABS-CBN, on January 16th. However, the audience breakdown showed that mobile users preferred INQUIRER.net, which achieved 30.57% audience share.

In comparison, ABS-CBN had 26.25%; GMA had 20.39%; Rappler had 15.49%; and Philstar had 7.30%, according to Similarweb.

INQUIRER.net earlier announced that it has decided to engage the services of Similarweb for online traffic monitoring as well as guidelines for content and publishing strategies.

This decision was made because Alexa Internet is expected to cease operations by May 2022.

Inquirer Interactive Inc. Chairman and President Paolo R. Prieto also said the decision to operate Similarweb was due to INQUIRER.net’s desire to stay on top.

“The decision to switch to Similarweb is a necessity with the impending shutdown of Alexa. Alexa has served our needs for years, especially with its ranking which is a globally accepted measurement tool for our online traffic against our competitors. Prieto said in a statement.

“In looking for a replacement, we looked for two things. First, a globally accepted ranking that would be accepted by our stakeholders. Second, we wanted an innovative technology partner who would help us improve our knowledge and analytics as we seek to stay on top of the news publishing industry in the Philippines,” he added.

JOHANNESBURG – The regional coordinator of Operation Dudula in Rustenburg said they were called xenophobic when they were just showing their patriotism.

The controversial anti-migrant group launches its North West branch in Rustenburg on Wednesday.

Dudula has targeted suspected drug dens, unregistered businesses and undocumented foreign nationals whom they accuse of being responsible for much of the country’s socio-economic problems.

Rollance Mabula said that as an unemployed father living in Rustenburg, he decided to root out the rot from what he believed to be the source of this community’s problems.

“We have a problem of illegal immigrants in positions that are supposed to be filled by South Africans. How should I feel when I see people from outside this country coming to prostitute our children here? »

And while some of the songs that are sung use pejorative terms to refer to foreigners, Mabula said he and Operational Dudula are not xenophobic.

“There is no such thing, we have no problem with anyone being legally in this country.”

The regional coordinator said that after the launch in Rustenburg, they would go to other parts of the province, like the British in the local municipality of Madibeng.

The new Bracebridge OPP Detachment Commander said he will pursue a community-based approach to policing.

“I don’t know if there are many officers who joined all those years ago with the intention of becoming a detachment commander, but as your career unfolds and you get to this point in your career and your decision-making process, you make decisions,” says Jason Nickle, who was officially named Detachment Commander on April 9. “Ultimately, I had no intention of reaching his rank, but now that I am here, it is an absolute honor to be able to lead the officers of this detachment and be able to serve the public in this capacity. .

He succeeded Insp. Mike Burton, who retired in February, making way for Nickle to serve as acting detachment commander while the force sought a permanent body to take on the post.

“I want to make it a place where people want to come,” Nickle says. “I want to make it a place where officers want to do a good job for the community.”

Nickle says this will involve taking a “three-pillar approach” to policing. Two of the pillars, criminal investigations and traffic enforcement, are data-driven, but the third, community engagement, is not.

“I want to see my officers in public,” he said. “I want to see them get off the cruisers, I want to see them walk downtown, I want to see them engage with the kids playing ball in the park. I really think it’s important to me to rebrand our image, if you will, making sure members of the public know that our agents are also members of the community.

An initial goal for Nickle will be to make Hwy. 11 and 400 safer. “I really discovered that it looked a lot like a race track on the highway. 11,” he says, noting that he is still commuting from his home in Victoria Harbor as he tries to find a home in Muskoka.

“One of my main mandates is to break down some of the barriers that existed in the past,” says Nickle.

Although he says communication with the OPP Huntsville Detachment is good, he wants to say more. Nickle says he plans to work on expanding the resource sharing arrangement between the two detachments, including maritime patrol and joint traffic units.

“There are changes that need to be made, absolutely, but I don’t necessarily want to come in and crack the whip, so to speak,” Nickle says. He wants to take a collaborative approach with officers on how to move forward. “I know that over the past couple of years there have been significant incidents involving members of the public that may have given a bit of a misinterpretation of what we’re doing at this detachment,” Nickle adds.

“Everyone in this building is doing a great job, and I really want to focus on that and move to a more humanistic approach,” Nickle says.

It makes sense that companies that are successful enough to grow at the enterprise level may one day go international.

For the business owner, this is an exciting and daunting prospect. You have the opportunity to present your brand and your offers to customers from different countries.

On the one hand, this effort will be to replicate the success you have had in your own country.

On the other hand, marketing to the United States will be different from marketing to France, Germany or Australia.

Your website will play a huge role in serving your international customers, which means international SEO is necessary.

At the most basic level, practicing international SEO means targeting specific countries and languages on your website.

But it is not enough to simply have these pages available to international users. How will you optimize for better placement and visibility on Google and other search engines?

Be sure to focus on these 4 fundamental areas of international SEO to give your site its best possible chance in new markets.

1. Establish the right URL structure for international pages

Enterprise and large-scale websites will have a ton of pages, probably hundreds or thousands. When you’re in the e-commerce market, those product and category pages add up quickly.

One of the main steps to follow if you want users from another country to find what they are looking for on your website is to create your international pages for the right audiences using the appropriate country-coded URL structure. .

Take this example.

Suppose you are an online consumer electronics retailer based in the United States and you have done research to show that you will increase your profits if you expand into the UK market.

You’ve already done all the SEO for your US-based pages, but now you need to create and optimize pages for a UK audience, i.e. pages that Google will show for users searching from the UK.

The first, and perhaps most important, step is to create UK-centric web pages, built with URL structures that mean the content is aimed at UK users.

There are several ways to do this. Many international websites choose to country-code their international URLs with a ccTLD, which in this example would be “.uk”.

Other options include creating:

  • One country-coded subdomain (uk.sitename.com).
  • A subfolder on your original website (websitename.com/uk).
  • Another domain entirely (newwebsitename.com, optimized for UK users only).

You will have to decide for yourself which approach is best.

For example, you might think that establishing a separate domain for each new country you expand into is a bad idea. Your organic traffic data will be split across your websites, preventing you from seeing everything at a glance.

Subdomain and subfolder routes would allow you to view international versions of your site separately while allowing you to collect organic traffic data in one place.

Either way, telling search engines which version of your website is for each country is necessary to rank with the right audiences. Design a way forward with this before you do anything else.

2. Go All-In On Page Experience for International Users

Country-specific URL structures are ideal for getting your international pages to rank for the right audiences.

But let’s say you get the “.uk” subdomain version of your site for UK user ranking. These users then visit the site and notice that you are using American English rather than British English.

It might not be a big deal right now, but it’s still a little off-putting.

Then, after checking your prices, those UK users can only see the costs in US dollars.

They will need to convert dollars to pounds and figure out what they will need to make a purchase. But why do this to your potential customers?

Just like in traditional SEO, international SEO must consider user experience.

Whether you are serving web pages to a British audience who shares the English language with the United States, or to Italian users who speak a completely different language, be sure to translate all of your website content for the users it is intended for. destined.

You can use any translation tool to do this, but the story doesn’t end there.

You will want to determine if Google is showing this version of your page to the right audience by adding hreflang attributes to your pages.

Hreflang tags are signals that tell Google the language used on the page. Why is this important?

Because then Google will show that version of the page to users who come from IP addresses that speak that language.

Of course, keep in mind that languages are not necessarily confined within national borders.

If you create German-language versions of all your pages specifically for German speakers, remember that German is spoken in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

You don’t want Google to leave those last three countries in the cold with search results by showing German pages only to people in Germany.

To solve this problem, you can add hreflang tags for specific countries.

In this case, you would have tags for other countries using their letter abbreviations.

So German itself would be “hreflang=de”, while you would use “hreflang=de-ch” for German speakers in Switzerland.

When it comes to currencies, you should make sure to check out the currency options on Shopify, Woocommerce, or whatever platform you’re using to select which currencies you’ll accept.

Ideally, you will be able to accept whatever the national currency of the target country is.

You may also want country-specific resources on every translated page of your website to address user concerns about taxes, customs, and shipping.

3. Be aware of international keyword differences

When you are a large corporate website that grows in different countries, you should also be fully aware of the differences in keyword trends between countries.

There is the problem of keywords appearing in completely different languages in other countries. However, even in countries that speak the same language, the terms may differ (“elevator” in the United States, “elevator” in the United Kingdom).

You can use tools like Semrush and Ahrefs for keyword research based on search volumes in different countries.

This is where things can get a little tricky. Depending on local things like culture, weather, language, and history, your customers may have their own common words for things.

Take the example of American English speakers who say “bicycle” in casual conversation much more often than they say “bicycle”.

You will need to spend time researching the terms used in your target countries and translating them correctly if necessary if you want your pages to rank for the most relevant terms.

With corporate websites and other large-scale sites, this search can take a long time. It’s good to know you can do this before you commit to expanding internationally.

4. Look for backlinks from country-specific domains

The final point to cover is that as a business website with users in many countries, you will want backlinks to help you in this effort.

If you have any SEO experience, you already know the benefits of high quality backlinks.

The caveat to remember in international SEO is that your backlinks should come from websites with the same ccTLD as the version of the website you are showing people.

So if you have a version of your site for Japan, it makes sense that most of your backlinks come from websites with a “.jp”.

This makes sense from a user experience perspective.

Japanese users who follow these external links and find the Japanese version of your site will not be disturbed by the sudden discovery of an English page.

Your international link building strategy will be based on the products you sell and the market sectors where you sell them. Only you will know the best strategy for acquiring links to your pages from the appropriate domains.

Just think, “What types of backlinks would Google most associate with the trustworthiness of my site?”

International business SEO needs your full attention

It takes a lot of time and effort to achieve international SEO success, but if you’re a business that spans national borders, make sure your website is working for you rather than against you.

Go all out to create exceptional experiences for your international customers, and this decision could end up paying you dividends for years to come.
