At Microsoft’s conference to celebrate Xbox’s 20th anniversary, 343 Industries announced that Halo Infinite multiplayer will launch early in a beta format ahead of the game’s official launch date in December. The beta contains a good chunk of what Halo Infinite will offer when it officially launches, but the studio is taking this time to gather feedback and improve the multiplayer experience.

For gamers looking to sweat a little more online, Halo Infinite offers a Ranked Playlist. Compared to Quick Play, Ranked is a more intense and pressured game mode that may not be suitable for all Spartans. If you think you’re up for the challenge, keep reading for some handy tips on how to dominate in Ranked Mode.

Start of loading

Infinite Halo BR Cropped

Unlike Quick Play, you don’t start the match equipped with the MA40 Assault Rifle. Instead, the Spartans appear with the BR75 combat rifle. The combat rifle has burst fire instead of the constant automatic flow of the assault rifle, being successful with the BR75 therefore requires precision precision. The Combat Rifle deals considerably more damage than the Assault Rifle, especially on headshots.

PLAYER VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Ranked, you only spawn with the Combat Rifle, which means no secondary gun. However, there are still weapons scattered around the map that you can pick up to fill the empty weapon slot. Finding a second weapon quickly can be the difference between living or dying when you need to reload your combat rifle, and you can switch weapons to finish off an enemy. The Combat Rifle can be a bit difficult to aim due to the recoil, so take some time to practice with the Combat Rifle in Weapons exercises.

Types of games

halo-infinity capture the flag

The Ranked Playlist contains four play modes: Killer, Eccentric, Capture the flag, and Bastion. Currently, the Halo Infinite beta has all of the game modes compiled into one giant playlist, although community members have speculated that 343 Industries wants players to experience the different game modes before they actually get to them. separate separately when officially launching the game.

RELATED: Halo Infinite: A Complete Guide to the Gappleshot

The requirements for winning each game mode do not change much from the quick play in the leaderboard. For Slayer, your team must reach 50 killed before the enemy team. Oddball demands that your team hold the flaming skull for 100 seconds. Stronghold gives you the task of securing and while carrying points of interest on the map. The only slightly different mode is Capture the Flag. Instead of needing Three flag catches to win, Ranked requires a total of five capture.

Placement matches

infinite halo spartan team

Halo Infinite uses a robust ranking system that features six different rankings: Bronze, Money, Gold, Platinum, diamond, and Onyx. Each of the six rows is subdivided into six sub-rows, players can therefore be classified Gold 1 to Gold 6 before moving to the next rank. You have to play Ten placement matches to determine what your starting rank will be, but Halo Infinite offers the option to limit the type of players you compete against. If you prefer to play on a controller, you can configure the game to only suit you with other players on consoles. If you are a solo player, instead of selecting Open in the menu, select Solo / Duo and you will only encounter players who are either alone or with just one other person in their group.

Halo Infinite puts your mortality rate a little more than just winning matches. If you win matches but constantly turn negative, there’s a good chance you’re not moving very far up the ranking system. But it also doesn’t provide an excuse to go headhunting during Capture the Flag or Oddball, as focusing on the goal of winning the game remains the ultimate goal. Try to find a balance between killing, staying alive, and achieving the goal.

No mini-card

infinite halo no card

The omission of the minimap is one of the biggest changes in ranking compared to fast play. Ranked matches don’t give you the luxury of having the minimap in the lower left corner, so beware of enemies that might sneak up behind you.

Halo Infinite has a ping system which you should use in ranked matches to communicate where enemies are located or to direct traffic when playing objective based games. Using the ping system, along with normal team communications, will help achieve success without relying on the minimap. If you are still unfamiliar with the different card layouts, we recommend spending some time in custom games to learn all the different card designs.

Friendly fire

halo infinity fire pistols

Don’t say we didn’t warn you that ranked matches were intense. Halo Infinite wall lamp MLG Game Settings for its ranked matches, which means friendly fire is on. Because there’s no minimap to show where enemies and friends are, it’s easy to accidentally shoot and injure a teammate if you’re happy with the trigger.

Halo Infinite allows you to adjust settings to change the outline color of enemies. To avoid accidentally shooting your teammates, we recommend that you choose an enemy color that is completely the opposite of your teammates. Friendly fire cannot be avoided entirely as grenades are a major damage factor, but choosing a color to make enemies stand out more can continue to deal damage to teammates at a minimum.

One of the most common questions I get from business owners is a variation of the following: “Should I spend money on SEO or PPC?” “

This is a complex question, and there is no one right answer. But I can help you understand the factors you’ll need to consider when making your decision.

The basics: SEO vs PPC

We’ll start with a basic explanation for anyone unfamiliar with these strategies.

SEO stands for search engine optimization. We all regularly use search engines to find what we’re looking for, whether it’s an answer to a question about the story or a link to a store that sells a specific type of boot. SEO is all about optimizing your site to rank higher in search engines so that your target audience is more likely to discover it when searching for terms relevant to your industry. Typically, this means using a combination of on-site engineering modifications (ie.

Related: 3 tips to become a pay per click expert

PPC stands for Pay Per Click Advertising. The idea here is to use a platform like Google, Facebook, or Bing to place ads that your target audience will see. You will pay a fixed amount for each person who clicks on this link (hence the name of the strategy). On the backend, you will have full control over how these ads appear, how they are written, who they target and more.

Both of these strategies are common in the digital marketing world and both are relevant to search engines, although they require fundamentally different approaches. This leads a lot of people to assume that they are somehow opposed, or that you have to choose one over the other; in fact, SEO and PPC are at their best when working together.

Still, there are pros and cons to each.

Where SEO shines

SEO has several advantages over PPC, such as:

Long-term profitability and return on investment. For the most part, SEO is more profitable than PPC ads, especially in the long run. It takes a while for an SEO strategy to start gaining momentum because it takes time to create content, build links, and increase your domain authority in the eyes of search engines. But once that momentum is there, you will start to generate impressive returns.

Credibility and organic appeal. You have seen advertisements on Google before. What do you think of them? If you’re like most people, in most cases you will immediately ignore ads and go to organic search results. This is because organic search results have higher perceived credibility and more immediate consumer trust; This makes SEO a great way to make sure your business is seen as a true authority.

Competitive dominance (possibly). In the PPC world, anyone can advertise their ad for a given term if they spend enough money. But in SEO, you can’t buy your entry (at least, not that easily). Once you establish yourself as the ultimate authority for a given niche, it will be easy for you to maintain that competitive dominance. Of course, getting there can be difficult.

Peripheral advantages. SEO requires you to link, write good content, and make your site more user-friendly; this gives SEO a host of peripheral advantages and the potential to support many other marketing strategies.

Where PPC shines

There are also some important advantages for PPC over SEO:

Immediate effectiveness. You don’t have to wait months (or weeks, for that matter) for your PPC strategy to kick in. You will start to see your ads placed in the search engines as soon as you start paying for them, making PPC a faster overall strategy.

Guaranteed results. With SEO, there is a little bit of luck and hope. But in the PPC world, there is no such guesswork. You only pay for the clicks you actually receive, so in a way, you are guaranteed results.

Refined controls. PPC offers much more precise controls over your strategy. You can target exactly the audience you want to reach and test your ads to see how effective they really are.

Possible entry points. Established SEO competitors are hard to beat. But with sufficient budget and the right targeting, PPC ads can replace virtually any competitor.

The bottom line

If you want to grow your business as quickly and efficiently as possible, you need to use a combination of SEO and PPC ads. Each strategy has strengths and weaknesses that complement each other – and by using both, you can maximize your search engine coverage. That said, there are aspects of your business that should make you prioritize one strategy a little more than another; For example, if you have a limited budget and a long time horizon, SEO is the best option, while if you have immediate needs for increased traffic, PPC ads are superior.

Michigan’s road conditions have deteriorated as freeways improve across the country, according to a new report from the Reason Foundation.

The state ranked 34th nationally in terms of highway performance and profitability in 2021, dropping 10 places in the libertarian think tank’s annual highway report compared to the 2020 report, and landing in the bottom 10 States in multiple categories measured.

The report released Thursday examined road data from 2019 and congestion data from 2020, and classifies national roads into 13 categories. These include the condition of the roadway, traffic jams, bridge structures, fatalities and expenses per mile.

Michigan was one of four states, including New Mexico, Ohio and South Carolina, to drop 10 or more places in the rankings during the same period, compared to the 2020 report, which covered 2018 and 2019.

There were 1,219 bridges and more than 7,300 miles of poor freeways in Michigan, according to a report released in August by the White House.

Since 2011, commute times have increased 4.6% in the state, and individual drivers have paid an average of $ 644 per year in costs related to driving on damaged roads.

The report came days after President Joe Biden enacted the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which will include approximately $ 7.8 billion in funding for highway and bridge repairs. over five years in Michigan.

Crestwood Mayor Louis Presta has pleaded guilty to bribery, lying to federal authorities and tax charges in connection with a paid red light camera program. The cameras have taken Illinois drivers $ 1 billion in a decade.

Louis Presta resigned as mayor of Crestwood just before pleading guilty Nov. 17 to federal charges.

The former mayor’s guilty plea comes more than a year after Presta was trapped by the federal government in a deferred prosecution agreement involving a former SafeSpeed LLC partner who cooperated with the investigators.

Presta, 71, who has served as mayor of Crestwood since 2013, now faces up to 2.5 years in prison for corruption and official misconduct, lying to the FBI and IRS, and tax charges.

“It has been an honor to serve the residents of our village as administrator and mayor,” Presta wrote in her resignation letter on November 16. “I will make myself available to my successor to ensure a smooth transition.”

Presta’s confession makes him the most recent political figure toppled in a major federal corruption investigation into Illinois adoption and distribution of red light cameras.

According to the plea deal, Presta in 2018 worked closely with former SafeSpeed partner Omar Maani, whose company sent video clips of possible red light traffic violations to Crestwood officials for arbitration. . SafeSpeed would then receive a portion of the proceeds from approved ticket payments.

Presta told Maani he would ensure that the percentage of infractions approved by city officials remains high in return for cash payment, according to the plea deal.

In January 2018, Presta admitted to soliciting Maani to donate to his campaign for the Cook County Commissioner by paying a bill for an advertising agency. Presta emailed Maani an invoice for $ 4,125 in the same month.

“I thought you might have been worried about giving me money,” Presta told Maani on February 15, 2018, according to the plea deal. “I thought maybe you could pay part of a bill over there. “

Presta spoke to Maani by phone on February 27, bragging about the higher percentage of approved violations compared to the week before. He said, “We’re starting to get the numbers again… you’ve got a new sheriff in town,” according to the plea agreement.

The following month, Maani agreed to give Presta $ 5,000 in cash in exchange for helping set up another red light camera in Crestwood.

Maani gave Presta an envelope with the promised payment on March 7, 2018. Presta told Maani that he would “do my best for you”.

Presta then lied to federal authorities about the $ 5,000 bribe on September 26, 2019, even after he was shown a video of himself accepting the envelope. He told the federal government that there was no money in it.

The 23-year-old former Crestwood mayor and public servant is the latest politician caught in a broad federal corruption investigation into red light camera abuse and other profitable tactics. The cameras were responsible for issuing more than $ 1 billion in banknotes between 2008 and 2018, according to a survey by the Illinois Policy Institute.

Earlier this year, John O’Sullivan, former state lawmaker, former Worth Township supervisor and longtime ally of former Ilinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, pleaded guilty for his role in the red light camera system.

O’Sullivan admitted on June 17 that he conspired with longtime political agent Patrick Doherty and Maani to pay a $ 4,000 bribe in exchange for official support from an Oak Lawn administrator to add red light cameras at additional intersections.

Crestwood attorney Burt Odelson said a special meeting has been set for November 23 to choose an interim mayor who will sit until the next municipal election in April 2023.

Presta’s sentencing hearing is set for February 23, 2022.

Last week, the popular Rank Math SEO plugin received a major update that includes a new artificial intelligence system. The Content AI feature is a SaaS product that acts like a personal writing assistant to improve search rankings.

“We created Rank Math’s Content AI feature to revolutionize the content production and optimization process with proprietary AI that gives SEOs and content marketers a competitive edge,” said Bhanu Ahluwalia , Marketing Director of Rank Math.

The system allows users to search what their content should look like based on a keyword. Each keyword analysis costs one credit. This data is stored on the user’s server, so the same keyword used on multiple posts doesn’t cost more. Users get five free credits after creating a user account with Rank Math. However, they need to upgrade to one of three trading plans, ranging from $ 59 to $ 499 per year, for more.

Each of the trading plans comes with a specific number of credits. They’re marketed as free extras, but they’re not “free” for users who want to upgrade for credits only. The team says they are working on a pricing solution to address this issue.

Users should see a new Content AI module that they can activate from the plugin dashboard screen. Enabling this option creates a new tab under the Plug-in General Settings page for further configuration.

General settings for content AI.

The Content AI functionality works with the WordPress editor, the classic editor, Elementor and Divi. However, the team plans to extend this support to other page builders in the future.

Users can then enter a focus keyword from the post-edit screen and click the Content AI button. From there, they can search for the chosen keyword and Rank Math retrieves the suggestions from their system.

WordPress editor with Content AI score and content suggestions in the right sidebar.
Example of a post with the Content AI score.

The scoring system is easy to understand. Above 80 (in the green) is considered “good”. All of the following may require some work based on the plugin’s recommendations.

The main suggestions of Content AI focus on the total number of words, links, titles and media. When asked how the numbers were calculated, Ahluwalia said: “This is a calculation made based on the top-ranked content on search engine results pages (i.e. say the characteristics of classified content). ” It’s a proprietary system, so maybe the team isn’t ready to give the exact details.

The feature also allows users to copy related keywords to use in their posts, offers questions for the content to answer, and lists potential links to use.

The following video explains how Content AI works:

Are content scores a good thing?

I am admittedly skeptical of any claim from SEO tools. There is value in most plugins in the space, and Rank Math is no different. However, I also want end users to take SEO or content scores with a grain of salt. Hitting a specific word, link, header, or media count isn’t going to make or break you. These should be guidelines, not goal posts.

When asked how the score was calculated, I was directed to a knowledge base article on the Rank Math website. Nothing in the Content AI section explicitly explains the “calculations” behind the score. Essentially, the documentation refers to how the AI analyzes search results for various factors and describes how the tool works. There is generally solid advice throughout, but it doesn’t respond to how those scores are calculated.

Of particular concern was the recommended number of media for each post. I had access to a full demo of the feature with a few dozen posts to check. Almost everything I browsed in Content AI had a recommendation to use 18 media. The number felt bad. While I can’t claim to be an SEO guru, I don’t see why a typical 1,000 or 2,000 word article should require so many images or videos. Even with media optimized for the web, this could make pages load faster for many site visitors.

“It depends entirely on the focus keyword you set for your post,” Ahluwalia said of how the recommended number is determined. “Page speed is a ranking factor, but the number of media and its associated directive is a very easy way to see and quickly determine if this is something you need to do to rank as well. If we look at, for example, the keyword ‘SEO tools’, the recommendation is as high as 26, which is not surprising since the majority of ranking content has not only covered essential SEO tools. , they covered the 15, 20, even 109 “best SEO tools.”

“This concern about media usage in content when it comes to page speed is surprisingly common, but the reality is that content without a design generally doesn’t perform particularly well (although it does end up ranking, then not from the point of view of conversion / social sharing because people leave with the impression of meeting a wall of text). Much of the content on our site wouldn’t be the same without the images in the posts to paint a full picture and distill the complex SEO processes / ideas into something very simple for people to understand.

I generally agree that sites should use media alongside text. Going through one of the demo articles I had access to, the content didn’t seem to justify the recommended number.

This particular message had 1199 words and 32 paragraphs. It also featured six images, which presumably played a significant role in the 20/100 score. Content AI recommended 18 media instances.

Rank Math Content AI scores displayed on the right with recommended numbers. On the left, the number of paragraphs (32) is highlighted.

If the post had reached the recommended media count, there would have been an image for at least every two paragraphs. Even with half that number, visitors are unlikely to think they are just “hitting a wall of text”.

Maybe the analysis is correct. It might help the sites to rank. But, so much media mixed with text seems to me to be a suboptimal reading experience.

My main concern with tools like Content AI – this applies to SEO plugins in general – is that site owners try to make sure they are in the green. Instead of writing for readers, they write to rank. The two things are not mutually exclusive, but when end users regard the recommendations as gospel, it can lead to a delay in prose.

“We totally agree, and while AI content has come a long way, we’re also very fond of well-researched content that’s put together by humans like you and me (like everyone else. content from our own blog), “said Ahluwalia.” The goal of Rank Math Content AI is assisted content production and optimization (simplified by software).

“Generally speaking, as you say, traffic light style scores or numeric scores don’t paint a full picture of most content. It was a really big motivator for new content optimization suggestions that go beyond typical scoring (it’s the same no matter what topic you’re writing about). When you write something that is not research driven at all (ie. Specific set of people you have in mind. That content is still incredibly valuable. “

He went on to say that for what the Rank Math team calls “search-driven” content, there are specific elements that well-ranked competitor content has in common.

“It goes without saying that when using content optimization tools, the consideration of writing good, useful content must be present in order for the end result to be truly exceptional,” he said. . “The goal here is to help create content, ensuring that it meets search intent and responds to what search engines deem valuable and useful content.”

Press Releases

WASHINGTON DC – Today, US Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced that their Complete the Appalachian Development Road Network Act (ADHS) was promulgated as part of the bipartite agreement Law on Investment in Infrastructure and Employment (IIJA). The IIJA recently passed the House by a vote of 228-206, having already passed the Senate in August by a vote of 69-30. End the ADHS law is set to provide $ 1.25 billion in dedicated funding over five years to the transportation corridor network across the Appalachians for the first time since 2012. The Federal Highway Administration has confirmed that Ohio will receive $ 95.2 million dollars in funding through this legislation.

“The Appalachian Development Highway System has created thousands of miles of freeways, creating jobs and bringing significant economic development to rural Ohio and the rest of the Appalachians. Part of the system remains incomplete because it is difficult to build and expensive ”, Senator Portman said. “I am glad that we are one step closer to finalizing the system now that the President has enacted the bipartisan infrastructure bill.”

“In 1965, Congress authorized the creation of the Appalachian Development Highway System to bring trade and opportunity to our region. Since serving as Governor of West Virginia, I have worked hard to complete Corridor H, our last remaining section of ADHS, but we cannot do it on our own. And it is clear that West Virginia’s roads and bridges, which are among the worst in the country, require a significant investment, ” said Senator Manchin. “Our bipartisan bill will continue President Kennedy’s commitment to the Appalachians so long ago, and I am glad that this language was included in the final bipartisan infrastructure bill. This investment will provide $ 1.25 billion, including nearly $ 200 million for Corridor H, to connect West Virginia and the region to the rest of the country. “

The ADHS was enacted in 1965 by President Johnson to build 3,090 miles of highway. As of fiscal 2021, 91.1% of the system is under construction or open to traffic, with just 276 miles to go. According to the CRA, the total cost of completing ADHS is approximately $ 9.7 billion. Its completion would create 47,000 jobs and facilitate billions of additional goods and services in the Appalachians. Every dollar invested in ADHS yields an estimated return of $ 7.10.

Since its inception in 1965, the ADHS has generally received funding specifically dedicated to its congressional construction on an annual basis. However, in 2012, the Moving Forward for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) and his successor, the Fixing the U.S. Surface Transportation Act (FAST), no longer provided dedicated ADHS funds to state transportation departments, and many projects languished.

The goal of ADHS was to build in isolated areas of the Appalachians – places that are difficult, expensive and difficult to access. Dedicated federal funding is the only viable solution to complete the last portions of this essential network.

Activists are once again taking to the streets against the movement of a taxi stand which they say discriminates and puts vulnerable groups at risk.

Unite the Union said relocating the taxi rank would leave people with disabilities struggling to access the taxi rank and women would feel unsafe after dark.

The taxi rank outside Leeds station is currently just outside the station, but as part of the council’s plans to redevelop the station area, it would be relocated to Bishopgate across from the Scarborough hotel.

Click here for more Leeds News and Stories

Protesters will take to the streets on Wednesday 10 November in Leeds City Square from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The station’s development plan includes “wider and safer” steps and two passenger elevators – but disability activists say the new row will still be elusive for people with disabilities.

Access and Use-Ability Group (AUAG) said elevators can be difficult to access for some people with guide dogs and people with autism – they are campaigning for the row to be somewhere with step-free access.

Taxi drivers are also protesting – as the new row will only have room for six taxis while the current one will have 33.

Campaigners also said the new position “would lead all users and especially vulnerable people to queue in front of a notorious pub and in the city’s ‘Dark Arches’ area.

“An area which, at the best of times, is an intimidating place for single women and people with disabilities.”

Unite also announced plans to send an open letter to Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps protesting the move to the taxi stand.

A spokesperson for Leeds City Council said: “The proposals aim to make New Station Street pedestrian-friendly, traffic-free and safer for all who use the station area. As part of this, Leeds City Council (LCC), the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Network Rail developed proposals and LCC obtained a building permit to relocate the taxi rank to Bishopgate Street.

“The proposed move means people will no longer have to cross a busy road to access the taxi rank, and with the number of people using Leeds station expected to increase dramatically over the next few years, it will also be easier for people to get to and from the train station using what is already a busy street.

“Other upgrades will include a larger, more accessible and secure CCTV taxi shelter that will give passengers the ability to line up to City Square.

“The UK Transport Police will continue to monitor the taxi shelter which will also continue to be covered by Taxi Watch and Network Rail assistance to assist passengers and ensure their safety.

“Throughout this, we worked with representatives from disability access groups and other community members across town to discuss the proposals and help shape the design to meet their needs.

“We will continue to consider any proposals or suggestions to further improve the design as we finalize our program. “

Enter your zip code to see local issues near you

Taxi drivers and disability activists had already protested the move in September, where the Unite Leeds branch chairman said Leeds Live: “What happens when a train from London comes in and you have 100 people there, or on a Leeds United game day outside the Scarborough Hotel, or on a Friday or Saturday night.

“When these taxis are called from Sovereign Street, they will have to negotiate in traffic, through the general public. How long is it going to take?

“People will try to steal taxis, it will cause fights.

“Are people going to feel safe? Will young girls in the evening feel safe?

“It won’t work for people with disabilities, it won’t work for people with young children, it won’t work for young girls in the evening, it won’t work for taxi drivers.”

One of the top winners today on Crypto.com is Chiliz (CHZ), he is currently on a bull run testing his previous record of $ 0.58.

As of this writing, CHZ is trading at $ 0.52 with a market cap of over $ 3 billion. Let’s take a closer look at Chiliz and see what all the hype is about.

What is Chiliz?

According to their official website, Chiliz is:

The world’s leading provider of blockchain technologies for sports and entertainment

The Chiliz network currently powers Socios.com – a platform designed for esports and sports fans that allows them to manage crowds and support their favorite teams.

CHZ is the currency used on the Socios.com platform which allows users to exchange $ CHZ for their favorite team’s Fan Tokens. These tokens never expire and can be used to vote on the official team. The teams will respect the popular vote, allowing a form of crowd governance by their fans.

Why is the price of Chiliz increasing?

The most relevant news for today’s $ CHZ bull run has to be last night’s announcement of a partnership with more than 80 sporting properties. In a recent tweet, Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus said:

“More than 80 sports properties have announced partnerships with @chiliz x @socios, more than +100 already signed. “

This is a huge announcement, as integrating such a wide variety of sports teams is sure to drive traffic and engagement on the platform.

Looking at Socios.com’s Alexa Rank, we can see that traffic to the site has increased over the past month, coinciding with an increase in the market value of $ CHZ.

Chiliz price analysis and forecast

It’s clear that Chiliz’s biggest short-term milestone is $ 0.58, as $ 0.58 was CHZ’s last record hit on October 30.

Since then, the market has mostly moved sideways between the $ 0.43 and $ 0.48 levels. In the midst of the partnership announcement, we saw the price climb to $ 0.53 as investors got excited.

If the market breaks above $ 0.58, we can anticipate a stress test at $ 0.6 shortly thereafter. Maintaining the new support will depend on maintaining the trading volume of $ 1 billion + 24 hours.

Kelly Maing, 46, has spent much of her life working in the downtown El Paso clothing store, established 33 years ago by her parents, who emigrated from South Korea.

“See how sad it is?” It’s so quiet, ”she said on a recent weekday, wearing a blue work apron and face mask. “We basically survive. … Many stores have closed.

The store she runs, Pinochio, sells a range of handbags, necklaces, bracelets, other accessories and women’s clothing. She and other Korean-American store owners on South El Paso Street catered to Mexican shoppers, who regularly crossed the Paso del Norte, or Santa Fe Bridge, connecting the shopping districts of downtown El Paso and of Juárez.

Under normal circumstances, about 22,000 shoppers per day visited El Paso from northern Mexico, according to pre-pandemic investigation data from the City of El Paso City’s Department of International Bridges.

They accounted for up to 14% of total retail sales in El Paso, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. In 2019, this translated to $ 1 billion in so-called “retail exports”.

The loss of these sales particularly affected downtown stores.

Maing said about 80% of her pre-pandemic sales went to Mexican customers, including many Juarez business owners who purchased merchandise for their own stores, she said.

“We don’t make money without them,” Maing said.

Although many of Maing’s customers have texted her confirming that the bridges will truly reopen on November 8, she is anxious.

“The problem is, we’re expecting so much,” she said, “but we might be disappointed. “

Cindy Ramos-Davidson, executive director of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said retailers were expressing a mixture of excitement and skepticism.

Could there be another border closure at the last second? Will there be enough products for Juárez buyers? Will they come back to the numbers before?

“Right now, retailers in this arena are really scrambling to find some products that they would normally be in abundance with during this time,” Ramos-Davidson said. “But they are worried about taking the risk of being classified because they weren’t sure the border would open as it has been closed for 19 months.”

Children cross alone

El Pasoan Maritza Lozano, 27, said she worries every school day for her 15-year-old cousin, a U.S. citizen and sophomore from El Paso High, who crossed the bridge alone from Juárez from the return from classes in person.

“My uncle used to get up early to take her, but now she has to find a way to come and walk on her own,” Lozano said. “Sometimes she stays with me. And now that it’s cold, I tell her she should stay.

Border restrictions forced many U.S. citizen children to grow up quickly, as they found themselves crossing the border on their own, tasked with getting to school.

Lozano worries during the interval when his cousin is disconnected, waiting in the line of the Santa Fe Bridge inside customs, where cell phone use is prohibited. She worries that her cousin will walk through the busy streets of the city center and take the city bus to school.

“I’m still texting her, asking her ‘are you cruzaste?“where are you?” she said. “I know sometimes they won’t let you use your phones.”

Lozano said it was difficult for his extended family to be physically divided and not be able to see each other much.

“My aunt lives alone there. She fell into depression about three weeks ago and was taken to hospital, ”she said. “So now my cousin has stayed there so that (her mother) is not alone.”

Divergent pandemic strategies

When the US Department of Homeland Security announced border restrictions on March 20, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic left the world in limbo with a deadly and unpredictable virus. Authorities on both sides of the border quickly followed the restrictions with stay-at-home orders and mask warrants.

But neighbors’ strategies to fight the pandemic quickly diverged, creating friction in the Borderland.

Relying on seemingly limitless resources, the United States has relied on testing and ultimately massive vaccine distribution to fight the virus. Slow to buy vaccines in a competitive global market, Mexico has used the blunt tools of business closings, restrictions on large gatherings and mask warrants. Inequality emerged this spring, when Juárez faced a wave of contagion even as El Paso vaccinated residents by the thousands a day.

Mexicans in Borderland 18 and over gained access to vaccines over the summer, in part thanks to donations of American vaccines to Mexico and local efforts to vaccinate workers at the Juárez factory at the Tornillo entry point. .

“There should be a lot of lessons learned,” said. US Representative Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, who called for a unified binational strategy to fight pandemics. “We need to create standardized policies to keep the interest of public health at the forefront. “

Return of a binational weekend ritual

Mike Santillanes used to get up early on weekends and cycle from his home in Juárez to the Bridge of the Americas. There he would meet other Mexican cyclists to cross the bridge to the United States. They would pick up more cyclists along Copia Street in El Paso and then start their training.

Santillanes, 28, has been cycling on the road and in the mountains for eight years. Better roads and bigger mountains drew him to El Paso.

“The hardest part of being a cyclist in Juárez is the traffic,” he said. “The driving culture in the United States is a little more respectful than in Mexico. “

Santilles, 28, has been practicing this binational weekend ritual for almost two years, and he says he misses the camraderie of the mixed group. Some of his friends from El Paso crossed paths to ride in Juárez during the pandemic, but others he hasn’t seen since early 2020.

But when the bridges reopen, Santillanes will not make the trip to El Paso. Like thousands of others juarense whose border crossing cards expired during the pandemic, Santillanes is waiting for the American consulate in Juárez to renew his visa.

The backlog of visa applications has pushed back consular appointments until 2023.

Once his visa was renewed, he wanted to cross the Transmountain Ditch of the Franklin Mountains, a difficult route that climbs to over 2,000 feet.

“It will be great to be able to cross back,” he said. “We have already traveled all the roads here in Juárez and are ready for a change. “

Family, church visits on the horizon

News of the reopening fueled a wave of activity in Juárez, as people tracked down their border crossing cards, unused since March 2020, or prepared documents to renew their visas. Those who may cross paths have made plans to see their loved ones in the United States or take their first trips to favorite stores like Walmart, the Cielo Vista Mall or the Ross Dress for Less discount store affectionately known by juarense like “La Ross”.

Currency exchange offices around Juárez announced their rates in flashing red and green lights, 19 or 20 pesos to the dollar – the Mexican currency near an all-time high.

In the storefronts of Grupo Francie, people lined up with files and documents in hand, hoping that the US and Mexican passport and visa service provider could renew their border crossing cards.

Sergio Tejeda, an industrial engineer, waited outside Grupo Francie in a shopping center in the center of Juárez to renew his border crossing card.

“I have family there,” he said, “my mother, my brothers. They come here but not very often.

Manuela Castañeda, 63, has made her wishlist of what she will do when the border reopens: shopping, traveling, visiting family. She has close cousins living in Las Cruces that she can’t wait to see. She will give him a few days, she said.

“We will see how the situation is” at the border, she said.

Olga Beatriz Lugo, a resident of Juárez, crossed the border on her visa on school days to bring her daughter to the Lydia Patterson Institute in Segundo Barrio, which CBP tolerated because students are considered “essential.”

But what Lugo is really looking forward to, she said, is crossing Sunday again to attend church at the Abundant Living Faith Center in El Paso. Sunday was her day to practice her faith and relax in the security she feels in El Paso, she said.

She misses her religious community, she said.

After those difficult two years, she said, “What we all need more than anything right now is God.

The ‘little life’ of the border

How US Customs and Border Protection handles the reopening could determine what is restored to “normal” Borderland life and what can be lost, said Joe Heyman, director of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies at the University of Texas at El Paso.

CBP officials warned last week that travelers should expect longer-than-normal wait times at points of entry.

El Paso’s CBP field office trained new customs officers during the pandemic, often doubling down on new hires to learn from experienced officers on Sunday. Still, visa holders are urged to show their COVID-19 vaccination cards, which will likely slow border traffic.

It’s the crossbreeding that makes this community distinctive, Heyman said. When legitimate border crossings are made difficult – as was often the case under the Trump administration and as it has been throughout the pandemic – people tend to stay on “their” side.

“What is lost is the normal day-to-day, the ‘little’ life on the border,” Heyman said.

Visiting a cousin in El Paso. The cup of coffee or the evening with friends in Juárez. The shopping spree at mayor Yes menoreo downtown wholesale and retail stores. The race for a Whataburger jalapeño. Sundays with the abuelita in Juarez.

“The ‘little life’ is only small in each individual act,” he said, “but collectively it adds up.”

Cristina Carreon, Maria Cortes Gonzalez, Anthony Jackson, Vic Kolenc, Trish Long and Martha Pskowski contributed to this report.
