Kathy Manning, a former immigration lawyer and fundraiser from Greensboro, has been told to expect a wild ride during her first election campaign.
She had a shock the first day.
Manning filed for the Democratic nomination on Wednesday in North Carolina’s 13th District, the seat now held by first-term Republican Representative Ted Budd. Manning’s announcement was first reported by The News & Record in Greensboro.
If you want to know more about Manning, you can always visit his website.
But Budd’s campaign has already claimed kathymanningforcongress.com, offering her assessment of “The Real Kathy Manning” and calling her a “Democratic establishment insider” with ties to national Democratic politicians such as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi.
“Everyone told me that it would be difficult and that I would run into things that would be unexpected. I didn’t expect any dirty tricks before I even announced, ”Manning said Wednesday afternoon. “If Ted Budd wants to spend his time playing political tricks instead of doing his job, that’s his choice.
A “Ted Budd for Congress” logo can be found in the upper left corner of the site. It includes a photo of Manning with former President Bill Clinton, a place to enter your email address to join Budd’s team, and a link to donate.
“We see this as a fun way to showcase Kathy Manning and her background and what she’s going to bring to the race and what Ted is going to bring to the race. We had fun with it. I don’t know if it’s that fun for their campaign, ”said Andrew Bell, Budd’s campaign advisor.
Manning has created his own site at kathymanning4congress.com.
Manning said she was active in the community, supporting preschool programs for underprivileged children and retraining and mortgage support programs for those affected by the recession. She said the “dysfunction” in Washington had caused her to jump in the race – citing issues with health, taxation and immigration policy.
“I decided it was time to stop worrying and stop complaining and try to make a change,” Manning said. “I was totally overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and support I received from people I know throughout this community. The calls, emails and offers of help I have received have been incredibly rewarding. They know me. They know the work that I have done. They know the values that I have.
Fiorina, former executive at Hewlett-Packard, was mocked for not securing CarlyFiorina.org, who criticized her for layoffs at Hewlett-Packard.
“You cannot buy all domain names” Fiorina said at the time.
Bell said the Budd campaign has also bought KathyManningNC.com and will set it up with the same content it is trying to portray Manning as an establishment Democrat.
“It’s a way to showcase its true story. She’s a great Democratic donor, ”Bell said. “We think people should know this. “
Manning has donated around $ 200,000 to Democratic candidates and the party since 2000, according to the Center for Responsive Policy.
“I supported great Democrats and followed them for many years,” Manning said.
Last year, with strong backing from the Conservative Growth club, Budd won a 17-vote Republican primary for the seat, which was vacated by Rep. George Holding after the redistribution. Holding, from Raleigh, ran into the 2nd district. Budd won 56.1% of the vote in November 2016, beating Democrat Bruce Davis.
Budd is one of four North Carolina Republican incumbents targeted by the Congressional Democratic Campaign Committee, a list that also includes Holding. Democrat Adam Coker entered the race against Budd in June.
